I’m sitting on the sofa with my little friends and I the have desire to flash back to one of my favorite movies of all time:

Love This Movie!!!!

When Harry Met Sally so I pop it into the dvd player.  Of course I love that movie.  It’s funny, quirky, included at that time America’s darling, Meg Ryan and the pièce de résistance is that it’s primarily set in New York.  I think if Harry had visited the Dating Ideas link on centralpark.com, the romance between he and Sally would have popped off a lot sooner.

Who can forget the picture that was on every advertisement and dvd cover?  Seeing the fresh fall leaves in Central Park was one aspect of New York I was dying to see.  We could discuss the diner scene where Sally gives every patron a lesson in proving one can ‘fake it’ but that’s for another time.  After reading the history of Central Park I was both amazed and grossed out by its creation.  Progress definitely has two sides!

The Relaxing Spot, the Green Lawn

History

  • Wealthy Americans vacationing in Europe wanted to emulate public spaces seen in London and Paris

They thought it would:

*Establish city’s metropolitan stature

*Bring order to the lower class

*Raise their status in prominent New York society

  • Eminent domain used to obtain 700+ acres of land in the heart of Manhattan
  • Approximately 1,600 residents displaced in order to obtain more land for the park brought park to its current size

*Irish pig farmers

*German gardeners
*African-American settlements which included three churches and a school

Before Tavern on the Green Closed; Now Open as an Information Center and Gift Shop

  • First opened in the December, 1859
  • For many years mostly visited by the city’s riches 5 percent

Political Notes

  • Establishment of park found opposition from various groups
    • Why location on the East Side
    • Why financed through general tax revenues and not through benefit assessments on adjacent landowner

      So Green in the Summer

    • Would all classes benefit from the park
  • Struggle for control between Republican-dominated state legislature and mostly Democratic locally-elected office holders
    • State legislatures developed the city’s first planning agency, appointing Andrew Green as head
      • 1857-1870:  Central Park Commission oversaw development of uptown Manhattan and Central Park management
    • 1870 control of Central Park restored to local control
      • Park commissioners became mayor appointed post

Former Rules of the Park

  • Commercial wagons not allowed (working families couldn’ttour the park)

A Much Needed Break with a Friend

  • No group picnics
  • Boys must have a note from principal to play ball
